Miriam was at Base from the age of one until she was sixteen. Today she says she has to come back at least once a year to see her teachers because she misses them so much. Carolina says the values she holds are all thanks to the school. Neither one talks about methodologies. They talk about people. About how they felt. About what they took with them.
That is what Base has been building since 1962. And what translates, twelve years later, into a 97.5 % pass rate in the 2026 university entrance exams and an average score of 7.89 out of 10.
Children who join Primary at Base will continue with the International Baccalaureate programmes in Secondary and Bachillerato. They grow alongside the friends they already know, with a teaching staff whose average tenure is 12 years, and a coherent inquiry-based approach from age 6 to 18.
Continuity means all the time goes into growing, with classmates and teachers who already know the child.
The approach in Primary starts with an idea that sounds simple but changes everything: children learn better when what they study matters to them.
That is why every project at Base is organised as a unit of inquiry connecting several subjects around the big themes of the IB programme: Who We Are, How the World Works, Sharing the Planet. History, science and language come together in a single project because that is how knowledge works beyond the classroom.
20 children per class. But behind every classroom there is a team of 72 teachers for 710 children: language specialists, learning support teachers, counsellors, and a speech therapist. A structure that makes real split-group teaching, individual attention and genuine knowledge of every child possible.
The tutor at Base is the cornerstone of the educational process: they accompany people, one by one. Assessment is continuous and tracks every step of the learning journey: critical thinking, creativity and autonomy are measured alongside academic content. And families are an active part of the process at all times.
Base is part of Affinitas Education, a network of over 20 international schools in Spain, Italy, Mexico and the United States. In practice, this means access to an exchange programme between schools, ongoing teacher training to international standards, investment in facilities, and a shared Culture of Care that puts the wellbeing of every child, every family and every member of staff first.
Units of inquiry, English as an everyday working language across a good part of the day, and spaces designed so learning happens everywhere. This is what sits behind the Primary (elementary) programme at Base.
The framework behind everything that happens in the classroom is the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the same framework used by the best international schools in the world. Children investigate, question, organise and apply what they learn to something real and tangible.
The outcome goes well beyond grades. They become inquirers, thinkers, strong communicators and open-minded individuals: the attributes that the IB learner profile defines as the foundation of a solid international education.
"I was at Base from the age of one until I was sixteen. Having been helped to feel confident in a language that wasn't my own has made a huge difference. In university presentations I'm a step ahead of everyone else."
The English hours at Base are a different kind of hours: they are Science, Art and inquiry-unit hours. The language is used to investigate, create and communicate, with native or bilingual specialist teachers, from Year 1.
The target by the end of Year 6 is Cambridge B1. In the most recent exam session, 16 % of the children who sat the exam reached B2 directly, reflecting a level that exceeds the stated target.
A week in the Pyrenees. 100 % in English.
Children in Years 4, 5 and 6 spend a week in a village in the Aragonese Pyrenees at Number 16 School. Seven days of immersion where English is the only language allowed.
The playground, the garden, the lab, the library: they are all environments where learning comes to life. They form part of the weekly curriculum, as a natural extension of the classroom.
The Learning Forest was recognised as one of the three best educational design projects in Spain out of more than 800 entries at the IE Award for Educational Innovation 2021. Because it genuinely changes how the children who use it learn.
The Primary school day runs from 9:00 to 17:00. For families who need it, the campus offers free extended hours from 7:30 to 18:30. Two lunch sittings, on-site kitchen, a full-time nurse and school transport across central and northern Madrid.
Base has an active child-protection policy embedded in everyday school life: ongoing staff training, clear protocols for any safeguarding concern, background checks on all personnel, and a reporting channel accessible to children, families and staff. The safety of every child is part of the school's culture.

The average cost of after-school activities is €65/month. See the full programme here →

Wherever you live in Madrid, there is a route for you. Base runs school bus routes covering central and northern Madrid. Routes and stops may vary depending on demand each school year.
The Primary dining hall has its own on-site kitchen: menus are prepared by the school's own chefs under the supervision of nutritionists, with fresh produce cooked on the premises every day. Over 500 places, two sittings, and the weekly menu published on the website with a suggested evening meal included. From Year 4, children choose between two starters and a main course.
The retention figures show families stay. Miriam and Carolina explain why.
The teachers are extraordinary. I have wonderful memories of most of them, and I have to come back at least once a year to see them because I miss them so much.
Having been helped to feel confident in a language that wasn't my own has made a huge difference. In university presentations I'm a step ahead of everyone else.
The values I hold are all thanks to the school. The close bond with the teachers and with my classmates too; there was always a really positive relationship among everyone.
I will always carry a little piece of the school with me, because it is the reason I am the person I am today.
